You're Invited to a Special Screening Event: Hemingway & Gellhorn June 8

On Friday, June 8, join The Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park and Columbia College for a special presentation of the HBO Films production Hemingway & Gellhorn, followed by a Conversation about the film with the President of HBO Films, Len Amato, and the film's executive producer, Alexandra E. Ryan. 

The event begins at 5 p.m. with a reception at Columbia College's Film Row Cinema, 1104 S. Wabash. The screening begins at 6 p.m.

Birthplace Home Part of 'Oak Park Afternoon'

Join The Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park, Pleasant Home and Cheney Mansion in a three-site tour of Oak Park's historic and literary attractions as part of Wright Plus. On Friday, June 1, tour all three buildings, in any order, with light refreshments. Tours of the Birthplace Home will be offered throughout the afternoon on a continuous basis. One-site visit cost will apply to continue on to the Museum.

Tour the Hemingway Boyhood Home Sunday, June 3

The Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park will open the Hemingway Boyhood Home at 600 N. Kenilworth to visitors for the last time on Sunday, June 3 from 12-5 p.m. as part of the Oak Park Day in Our Village festivities.

This is a unique opportunity to tour the interior of this century-old home where famous author Ernest Hemingway honed his schoolboy writing skills while attending Holmes Elementary School around the corner and later Oak Park and River Forest High School.

Within a week of the open house the Foundation will turn over the keys to the home to an Oak Park family who will make it their private home.

Although there may be occasional opportunities in the future where the family can invite public visitation, this last chance to stroll through the rooms with Hemingway docents leading the way is very special. Stories about Ernest, his five siblings and parents Grace and Dr. Clarence Hemingway, living an exuberant family life from 1907 until Ernest left in 1919 and Grace left in 1936, will be memorable. This building is an international icon and few changes have been made since Grace Hemingway began planning her dream home in 1906.

Tours will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis. Advance reservations are not required, and donations to the Foundation as compensation will be appreciated.

June 28: 'To See a Thing Clearly: Exploring the Connection between Poetry and Journalism in Hemingway and Life' With PBS-TV Journalist and Poet Judith Valente

As a young writer Ernest Hemingway moved from poetry to journalism. His most poetic writing matured into fiction. Still each form of writing continued to inform his work. Judith Valente, a correspondent for national PBS-TV and former staff writer for The Wall Street Journal, Washington Post and People magazine, made the inverse journey -- from journalism to poetry. She will talk about how both poetry and journalism intersect in Hemingway's writing, and her own, and how we might begin to see the world through a poet-journalist's eyes.

Redd Griffin will explore how what Ernest Hemingway learned in the American heartland helped him write enduring literature for the world. While many influences of the Midwest affected Hemingway’s writing, he paid special tribute to his early work in journalism, which began at Oak Park and River Forest High School and continued at the Kansas City Star. Griffin’s program shows how through half a century on four continents Hemingway’s heartland writing led to writing for “the land of the heart.”

Sandra Spanier, editor of The Hemingway Letters, Volume 1: 1907-1922, will read from this first publication of all the surviving letters of Ernest Hemingway.

The letters reveal a more complex person than Hemingway's tough guy public persona would suggest: devoted son, affectionate brother, infatuated lover, adoring husband, spirited friend and disciplined writer. Unguarded and never intended for publication, the letters record experiences that inspired his art, afford insight into his creative process and express his candid assessments of his own work and that of his contemporaries.

You're Invited to July 21st's Hemingway Birthday Lecture

Join The Ernest Hemingway Foundation of Oak Park in celebrating Hemingway's birthday with Kansas City Star journalist and editor Steve Paul.

In the Hemingway Birthday Lecture, Paul will speak on some of Hemingway's earliest journalism experiences, many of which continued to resonate in small and large ways in his later fiction. the lecture will reference Kansas City and Chicago, and draw from his research and reading of published and unpublished material.

Paul has been a staff writer and editor at The Kansas City Star since 1975. Currently senior writer and arts editor, he manages staff and freelance critics and also writes about books, music, architecture, the arts, the city and restaurants. In 1999, the year of the Hemingway centennial, he edited a special commemorative section at The Star, which was Hemingway's first employer. That began Paul's immersion into the Hemingway world. His conference papers have been published in The Hemingway Review, in Key West Hemingway (University of Florida Press) and in two forthcoming books. In 2003 he also gave a conference paper at a Hemingway Colloquium in Havana, Cuba.

 

A reception will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the Lecture will follow at 8 p.m. at the Hemingway Museum, 200 N. Oak Park Avenue, Oak Park, IL.

 

Admission is $15 for the general public, and $10 for EHFOP members.

March 10: The Paris Wife Author Paula McLain Visits the Museum

Join the EHFOP in welcoming author Paula McLain, whose novel The Paris Wife chronicles the life of Hadley Richardson Hemingway, to the Hemingway Museum on Thursday, March 10 at 6 p.m.

McLain will read from and sign copies of her book, which can be purchased at the Museum bookstore prior to and during the event.
